Edinburg Economedes picked up its second district win of the season, beating PSJA North 28-14 on Thursday night at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg to enter the playoff picture.

“It speaks volumes for our program,” Economedes coach Gabe Pena said. “Like every other program, we came in wanting to get to the playoffs, and it feels good to be able to suit up for the last district game and still have an opportunity to do so.”

Senior wide receiver Pete Segura had two touchdown catches to lead the way for Econ.

“Pete has been able to, I think, catch a touchdown pass in every game,” Pena said. “He played well again tonight.”

Senior running backs Gabriel Ornelas and Sonny Castillo each added a touchdown to round out Economedes’ scoring.

Economedes trailed 14-13 coming into the fourth quarter, but the Jaguars came into the final stanza ready to play.

“Our defense played lights out football, and our offense started clicking again,” Pena said. “We had two scores, and that’s how the game ended. We were able to utilize the clock and stop them at the end.”

PSJA North’s (2-7, 2-4) loss puts them in real danger of missing the playoffs.
