It was a pretty good weekend for two area sub-6A softball teams.

The Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats are moving onto the Region IV-4A quarterfinals after a 12-5 win Friday night against Somerset in a one-game playoff.

The Lady Bobcats have now won consecutive one-game playoffs and are now set to take on Orange Grove sometime later this week.

Meanwhile, the Lyford Lady Bulldogs advanced to the Region IV-3A quarterfinals after sweeping Goliad on Saturday in their best-of-three area-round series.

Game 1 on Friday at Freer High School took 13 innings to decide a winner until Lyford’s two runs in the top of the 13th sealed a wild 15-13 slug fest. Jerrica Rojas collected four hits in the win and Evelyn Ortiz pitched 10 innings in the series-opening win.

Lyford completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory on Saturday afternoon at Alice High School.

The Lady Dogs will now face Santa Gertrudis Academy in the third round later this week.

“This series win was beyond amazing for this program,” said Lyford coach Joey Rios. “We will enjoy this over the weekend, but come Monday we will go back to work.”
