Bulldogs get blanked in bi-district, 12-0

For the Lions, John Cantu earned the win throwing six innings while giving up no runs and just four hits and delivering 11 strikeouts on the night.

Despite the loss, Lyford head coach Chris Cervantes wanted the seniors to know that the hard work they put in would not be forgotten.

“We didn’t perform the way we wanted to perform and we had a lot guys left on base tonight,” said Cervantes. “Tonight’s outcome isn’t indicative of how this team has played all year. I’m extremely proud of this team and I thought they kept battling, even through adversity.

“I’m extremely proud of this senior group because they were able to accomplish great things while they were here and I told them just a little while ago that they set the foundation for the underclassmen to build on.”

The Bulldogs had one of their best seasons in 22 years, winning the program’s first district championship since 1995 and ended the league season with an 8-1 record.

However, Friday’s game was not one of the team’s better performances by any means.

Lyford began the game by committing three errors in the first inning alone and would finish the contest with five.

The Lions scored three runs in the first, three in fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Lyford ace Layne Klosterman took the loss, giving up eight runs on 12 hits while striking out three in five innings of work.

On a positive note, the Bulldogs will graduate just four starters and bring back a large contingency of underclassman.
