The win puts San Benito at 10-1 on the league season with them notching their seventh consecutive victory that has head Kristy Leal in a good mood.
“Obviously it feels good to be able to get this win against a very tough team,” Leal said. “I wanted my girls to find success especially from my pitchers and the senior leadership tonight was incredible.”
The Lady Greyhounds got going early, scoring a total of five runs through three while limiting South to just one with pitcher Sarah Garcia tossing five strikeouts.
Diandra Padilla relieved Garcia in the fifth when South mustered up two runs to close in on the Lady Greyhounds’ lead at 5-3.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Padilla zipped one past South batter Kytana Muniz to close out the inning and end any chance of the Lady Hawks’ comeback.
The Lady Greyhounds went on to extend their lead in the sixth inning with two more runs to put themselves on top 7-3.
Garcia, who closed out the game at shortstop, iced the game with a solid grab that solidified the Greyhounds’ victory.
Now that San Benito took care of business against South, its next notable matchup comes against the Weslaco Lady Panthers on Thursday at Lady Greyhound Field.
The last time the two met, San Benito was able to squeeze out a 3-2 victory. A win on Thursday would go a very long way toward a league title.
Meanwhile, South’s loss dropped the Lady Hawks to 7-4 in conference play and they will host the Lady Panthers on Tuesday.
