For the San Benito Greyhounds, the season hasn’t gone as well the team would have hoped for. A combination of youth and inexperience has made it difficult for San Benito to get anything going this season.
But after a rough 2-8 start to the District 32-6A season, San Benito head coach Ramiro Partida decided to go back to the fundamentals of baseball and clean up a few things.
“I told them that we have to keep fighting. I feel these kids have deserved a little more wins than they have,” said Partida. “These past few games we’ve being going back to the fundamentals like using two hands and receiving ground balls, and fly balls and seeing the ball longer while you’re hitting; and it worked a little Tuesday.”
Tuesday’s 6-2 victory over Brownsville Rivera snapped a five-game losing skid that stretched back to March 21 when the ’Hounds defeated Harlingen South 6-1.
However as Coach Partida explained, the record is in no way indicative of how hard the kids work and the effort that goes into every game.
“The record doesn’t reflect how hard these kids are working,” he said. “The good thing about it is that after the games the parents come and talk to us and see how down the kids are after a loss, and they tell us ‘Coach, you guys are working hard and the record doesn’t indicate how these kids work hard.’
“People see the record and might say it’s not a good one, but they do work hard. There just always seems to be that one inning that always hurts us.”
Tonight, after a quick turnaround from Tuesday’s game, the Greyhounds host Harlingen South (2-8) at 7.
In other District 32-6A games being played tonight, the race for the league title is coming down to the wire. Two of the district’s top three league leaders, Brownsville Hanna (8-2) and Los Fresnos (8-2), will square off a in a must-win contest at Brownsville.
Meanwhile, the other title contender, Harlingen High, will host Weslaco East at 7 p.m. The Wildcats defeated the Cardinals 14-4 in an earlier encounter between the two, however the Cardinals are on a four-game win streak with Weslaco East, Los Fresnos, Brownsville Hanna and San Benito all remaining on the schedule.
