Lady Hawks to host Weslaco East on Saturday morning

HARLINGEN — The Harlingen South Lady Hawks have consistently been one of the top girls soccer teams in District 32-6A and this season has been no different.

Currently, the Lady Hawks are in second place with a record of 10-2 (30 points), just ahead of third place Brownsville Rivera (8-4, 24 points) and just behind a dominant and undefeated Los Fresnos squad (12-0, 36 points), which sits at the top of the table.

However, with two games left in the regular season, there is always some level of uncertainty in the race to the playoffs.

“It’s toward the end of the season and everybody is playing very well right now,” said Harlingen South head coach Omar Pedroza. “If we win against Weslaco East then we secure the No 2 spot, but we’re playing a tough Weslaco East team and they still have a chance of getting fourth place.

“Hopefully we can win, but it’s going to be very hard.”

Another obstacle that will make it harder for both teams is the weather. For the past few days weather has wrecked havoc on athletic fields across the Rio Grande Valley, and today the forecast predicts more of the same.

However, today’s match is scheduled to take place on Boggus Stadium’s turf field at 10:30 a.m. However, as Pedroza pointed out, the game will be played even if it rains, barring any lighting.

Under UIL rules when visible lightning strikes or a cloud-to-ground lightning bolt is seen, the thunderstorm is close enough to strike your location with lightning. The game must be suspended for 30 minutes while players and spectators take shelter immediately.

Once activities have been suspended, officials must wait at least half an hour following the last sound of thunder or lightning flash prior to resuming an activity or returning outdoors.

The Lady Hawks close out the season on Monday against the Brownsville Rivera Lady Raiders at Sams Stadium at 11 a.m.
