SOFTBALL NOTEBOOK: Lady Chargers still a perfect 5-0 in District 32-5A

After Tuesday’s slate of softball games, the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Lady Chargers find themselves as the only team with a spotless 5-0 record in District 32-5A play.

The Lady Chargers knocked off Donna High 15-0 in four innings Tuesday night behind a no-hitter from sophomore Mia Anzaldua.

Now, they take in a week of rest after having today’s scheduled non-district home matchup with La Joya cancelled, but Lady Chargers head coach Ray Cardenas believes his players will keep their edge.

“The girls are playing really well right now and they are working hard,” Cardenas said. “But they understand that we have a lot of season left because we’re not even at the halfway point (of district) yet. We’re pleased that we’re where we want to be at, but we know we have a lot of challenges coming in the next couple of weeks.”

The Lady Chargers return to the field next week on Tuesday night at Pace before hosting Lopez in a big district game Friday night.

Lopez currently sits at 4-1 in district play after taking its first loss Tuesday night in a 13-2, five-inning home game to Mercedes, who also is 4-1 in district play.

Lopez head coach Jesse Martinez doesn’t see the loss shaking his team’s confidence.

“(The players) are doing well because their unity is actually very strong,” he said. “We did face a good program and (Mercedes) had a good pitcher. She was one of the best we’ve seen all year and we didn’t get the production we needed from our lineup. But we’re going to remain strong and our girls are still very positive — we’re going to be fine.”

Elsewhere in the district, Porter fell to 2-3 in league play after a 3-0 loss at Edcouch Elsa (2-3 in district).

QUICK TURNAROUND

While District 32-5A takes a bit of a break, teams in District 32-6A will be back in action today.

The Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, after squaring their district record at 2-2 with a 7-3 home win over the Hanna Lady Golden Eagles on Tuesday night, will face Harlingen High (1-3 in district) at 11 a.m. today in Harlingen.

Meanwhile, Hanna (1-3 in district) is hoping to rebound when they hit the road for their own 11 a.m. game against the San Benito Lady Greyhounds (3-1 in district).

The Lady Greyhounds look to get back into the win column after falling at Harlingen South (3-1 in district) 3-1 Tuesday night.

Rivera (0-4 in district), who is coming off a 26-1 loss to Weslaco High, plays host today to Weslaco East at 11 a.m.

LADY TARPONS LOOK TO REBOUND

The Port Isabel Lady Tarpons were roughed up at home on Monday night in a 14-0 loss to Hidalgo, dropping them to 3-1 in District 32-4A play.

Port Isabel will continue district play at Zapata today at 11 a.m.
