Soccer notes: Lionettes, Lady Bobcats take aim at history

For the past three seasons the La Feria Lionettes have headed into the area round of the Class 4A playoffs hoping to go just one round further only to get handed a loss.

Fast-forward to this year where the team is once again in the second round of the postseason against a tough Rockport-Fulton team that they will take on at 5 p.m. today at Alice High School

However, this season first-year head coach Adriana Carmona is trying a different approach in an effort to get the team over the hump that has plagued the past three seasons.

“I told the team to go home and look themselves in the mirror and to tell themselves that they can win because they have been working hard, and it’s not time to go home yet,” she said. “We can be our own worst enemy because if we tell ourselves that we can’t win then we won’t do it, but if we tell ourselves that we can win then it’s one less opponent we face and it will be easier to achieve our goal.”

The Lady Pirates come fresh off defeating Somerset 5-0 in their bi-district contest. Meanwhile, the Lionettes defeated Edinburg IDEA Quest 3-0 Saturday.

The winner between the two will face the winner Between Hidalgo and La Vernia.

CHASING HISTORY: Making the area round of the Class 4A playoffs has already given the Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats plenty to celebrate, however the team has no plans of going home just yet.

Tonight the Lady Bobcats face the Pleasanton Lady Eagles at 7:30 at Alice High School.

In the first round of the playoffs, Rio Hondo defeated Grulla 2-0 and head coach Karen Ramirez wants to make sure her team does not forget that they can win again.

“I’m going to remind them how far we have come since the beginning of the season,” she said. “I’m going to remind them that they know how much they have grown and improved from the very first day until now.

“I reminded that they play for the players that came before them and they play for the community, they play for the school and they play for their families, but most importantly they play for each other.”

The winner between Rio Hondo and Pleasanton will face the winner between Kingsville King and Port Isabel.
