Top sub-6A program to be recognized at All-Valley awards

Three of the Rio Grande Valley’s elite sports programs are nominees for Sub-Class 6A Program of the Year.

The winner will be recognized June 14 at the 2016 All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet at DoubleTree Suites in McAllen. Dallas Cowboys legend Drew Pearson is the keynote speaker for the event.

Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers is the presenting sponsor of the banquet. Representing the Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers are Bert Ogden Chevrolet, Clark Chevrolet, Fiesta Chevrolet, Gillman Chevrolet, Payne Weslaco Motors, Rio Motor Co. and Tipotex Chevrolet.

Pearson, who was inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2011 after a standout career defined by his performances in the clutch, will highlight the function hosted by RGVSports.com in conjunction with the RGV Sports Hall of Fame.

The awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m. and recognizes team and individual standouts in multiple sports over the past year. Tickets are $40. All nominees get in free.

Representatives from the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, The Monitor, the Brownsville Herald and the Valley Morning Star voted on three nominations for Sub-6A Program of the Year.

The nominees:

>> Edinburg Vela: The SaberCats won district championships and enjoyed deep playoff runs in football and boys basketball. The boys basketball team advanced to the state tournament, the first Valley program to do so since 2009. Vela made the playoffs in girls basketball, baseball, softball and boys soccer. In softball, it advanced to the area round of the playoffs for the first time.

>> Santa Rosa: The volleyball team made playoffs; the boys and girls basketball teams made playoffs, with the boys team winning a district title and advancing to the regional final; softball won its first ever district title; baseball made the playoffs as a No. 2 seed in district; the boys track team was second at the district meet.

>> La Feria: The Lions’ boys and girls basketball teams were district champs: the girls soccer team was district champ; the boys soccer team made the playoffs; the football team was the district champ and advanced to second round of the playoffs; the boys and girls tennis teams were district champs. The boys track team was the district and area champ. The volleyball team was the district champ.
