Metro-area Girls Basketball Notes: Lady Falcons are looking to play a complete game

Los Fresnos has been on a rollercoaster lately. Inconsistency from one game to the next has been the culprit.

The Lady Falcons are right in the mix for the postseason, tied for third place in District 32-6A at 4-4 with Hanna and Harlingen South.

But Los Fresnos coach Kim Edquist would like to see her team put together a consistent effort throughout an entire game.

“We haven’t been consistent yet,” she said. “At this point in the season, they need to get consistent to put those four quarters together. They’ll be a tough team to beat once they do that.”

Recently, Edquist has seen her team challenge the top two teams in the district, Harlingen High (lost 49-42) and Brownsville Veterans (lost 46-45), but fall short because of things like missed free throws and layups.

Edquist hopes her team finds that consistency during the second half of district play and hopefully earns a playoff berth in the process.

“The thing that we need to do is put four quarters together,” she said. “If they can put four quarters together, we’ll beat anybody.”

MOVING FORWARD: Pace lost for the second time in district play to Mercedes on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers have been the only team to beat the Lady Vikings in District 32-5A this season.

Pace played a forgettable third quarter against Mercedes, a time in which the Lady Vikings have shined this season.

“Usually the second half is ours,” Pace coach Kris Metzmaker said. “I’ve been so proud of them all year in the second half. We made a run at it, but we can’t come out in the second half and play a third quarter like that. We have to play better in the second half.”

But Pace isn’t going to dwell on the loss. The Lady Vikings are still second in the standings and most likely looking at a playoff berth.

“We have to put this game behind us,” Metzmaker said. “We don’t have time to worry about losing this game if we want to stay in second, we have to win out. We have a lot of work ahead of us.”

SO FAR, SO GOOD: First Baptist is 4-0 in district play after a 51-34 win over South Texas Christian Academy on Monday.

The Crusaders have six remaining district games on the season, including Macedonian Christian Academy and one of their toughest opponents in district, Juan Diego Academy.

First Baptist expects a similar game this time around.

“They have their eyes on us, as they have now scouted us twice,” First Baptist coach Marty Bogart said via text message. “They are a worthy opponent, well-coached. We will see what team has the true heart to win.”
