San Benito makes debut at No. 1 in RGVSports.com Top 10 Poll

There is another unanimous No. 1 in this week’s RGVSports.com high school football Top 10 poll, but it’s a new team.

San Benito, the former No. 2 team, makes its debut as No. 1 after beating San Antonio East Central 49-28 last week at home to go to 2-0. With previous No. 1 Harlingen High falling 30-13 at home to Laredo United South, the Greyhounds were a unanimous No. 1 pick by RGVSports.com’s voters.

The seven voters are writers who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers (the Monitor, Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald).

With San Benito earning its second straight impressive win of the season, following its rout of regional power Laredo United in Week 1, the Cardinals committed five turnovers in a hapless defeat to United South. That dropped Harlingen High, which travels to San Antonio to face Reagan this week, to No. 3 and lifted Los Fresnos, on a bye last week, from No. 5 to No. 2. The Falcons beat Edcouch-Elsa 50-40 in Week 1 and play at McAllen High this week.

Weslaco East makes the biggest leap in this week’s poll, jumping from No. 10 to No. 4 after improving to 2-0 with last week’s overtime win at McAllen Memorial. The Wildcats, who won at Sharyland High in Week 1, continue their rugged non-district slate by hosting 2-0 Edinburg Economedes on Thursday.

Edcouch-Elsa also made a considerable leap in this week’s poll, moving from No. 9 to No. 5 after a dramatic and impressive 34-30 home win against Edinburg Vela last week. The Yellowjackets are averaging 37 points per game this season and visit La Joya to face Juarez-Lincoln this week.

The aforementioned SaberCats drop three spots to No. 6 following their loss at Elsa. Vela has another tough task this week when it hosts 2-0 Brownsville Veterans Memorial.

Weslaco High moves up a spot to No. 7 after its 48-20 blowout of San Antonio Marshall. The Panthers, who fell 38-0 to Richmond George Ranch in Week 1, host 0-2 Mercedes this week to close their non-district schedule.

McAllen Memorial fell four spots to No. 8 after losing to Weslaco East last week. The Mustangs play at San Benito on Friday.

Despite going to 2-0, Roma dropped two spots to No. 9 after a 16-0 win against La Joya High. The Gladiators, who also have a win over La Joya Palmview, begin District 31-5A play by hosting 2-0 Laredo Nixon this week.

At No. 10, Brownsville St. Joseph, a TAPPS program, makes its Top 10 debut after going to 2-0 with a 30-7 win against Lyford.

The Bloodhounds, with standout quarterback Kai Money and McAllen High transfer Gunnar Henderson and McAllen Memorial transfer Ricky Miner, beat Grulla 64-35 in Week 1.

Other teams receiving votes in this week’s poll: PSJA North, Edinburg Economedes, Brownsville Veterans Memorial, La Feria and Mercedes.
