Brownsville Lopez is the newest entry into RGVSports.com’s high school football Top 10 poll heading into Week 10 of the season.

The 6-2 Lobos made their way into the rankings at No. 10 after an impressive 24-21 win over previously ranked Mercedes. Lopez, Mercedes and Brownsville Veterans Memorial are in a three-way tie for first place in District 32-5A. Each is 4-1.

San Benito remained the unanimous No. 1 team for the eighth straight week. The Greyhounds are 8-0 after a 49-21 win over Brownsville Hanna last week.

San Benito was voted No. 1 by all of RGVSports.com’s seven voters who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers (the Monitor, Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald). The Greyhounds visit Weslaco High, ranked No. 5 in this week’s poll after a nice 20-10 win over Harlingen South last week, on Friday night.

Nos. 2 and 3 in the poll remained the same. Harlingen High is No. 2 at 6-2. The Cardinals beat down Los Fresnos 56-21 last week and have won five straight games heading into this week’s game at Brownsville Hanna.

No. 3 is Edinburg Vela. The SaberCats are 7-1 and winners of six straight games after taking care of previously undefeated PSJA North 30-14 last week.

Vela hosts PSJA High on Thursday.

McAllen Memorial moved up a spot to No. 4 despite having a bye last week. The Mustangs are 6-2 and host La Joya Juarez-Lincoln on Thursday.

The aforementioned Weslaco High Panthers are No. 5, moving up three spots from last week, and Sharyland Pioneer moved up three spots as well and stands at No. 6 in this week’s poll.

The Diamondbacks dominated Valley View 56-24 last week to improve to 6-2 and clinch a postseason berth for the first time in the program’s three years of varsity football competition. Pioneer is in line to at least earn a share of the 31-5A title and visits Laredo Martin on Friday.

PSJA North dropped three spots to No. 7 after suffering its first loss of the season to Edinburg Vela. The 7-1 Raiders host Edinburg Economedes on Friday.
