It’s only right that the top two teams in RGVSports.com’s Week 11 Top 10 high school football poll meet up the last week of the regular season to determine a district champion.
That’s the case with unanimous No. 1 San Benito and No. 2 Harlingen High. The two longtime rivals square up Friday to determine the winner of the District 32-6A crown.
San Benito remained RGVSports.com’s No. 1 team for the ninth straight week after beating Weslaco High 27-7 last week. The Greyhounds are 9-0 and were voted No. 1 by all of RGVSports.com’s seven voters who cover RGV high school football for AIM Media’s three newspapers (the Monitor, Valley Morning Star and Brownsville Herald).
Harlingen High is 7-2 and winner of six consecutive games. The Cardinals beat Brownsville Hanna 31-14 last week.
Nos. 3 and 4 in the poll stayed the same. Edinburg Vela, at 8-1, is No. 3 and coming off a 64-40 win over PSJA High. The SaberCats play Edinburg Economedes on Friday and can clinch the outright District 31-6A title with a win.
District 30-6A champ McAllen Memorial is No. 4. The Mustangs are 7-2 after dominating La Joya Juarez-Lincoln 59-7 last week. McAllen Memorial closes its regular season by playing McAllen Rowe on Friday.
Sharyland Pioneer moved up a spot to No. 5. The Diamondbacks are 7-2 and clinched a playoff berth for the first time in the school’s three years with a 33-3 rout of Laredo Martin last week.
Pioneer is in line to earn at least a share of the District 31-5A title when it hosts Roma on Friday.
Weslaco East is up two spots to No. 6. The Wildcats are 5-4 and coming off an impressive 28-7 win over Harlingen South last week.
East is in the playoffs if it beats Brownsville Hanna on Friday.
Los Fresnos climbed two spots to No. 7 after beating Brownsville Rivera 27-7 to improve to 5-4. The Falcons host Weslaco High on Friday night and are in the playoffs if they win.
The aforementioned Weslaco High Panthers are No. 8. At 5-4, Weslaco High fell to San Benito last week and now must beat Los Fresnos on Friday if it wants to play beyond Week 11.
Edcouch-Elsa returns to the poll at No. 9 after its 33-6 romp over former top-10 team Brownsville Lopez. The Yellowjackets clinched a playoff spot with the win and visit winless Brownsville Porter this week.
Brownsville Veterans Memorial rounded out the poll at No. 10. The playoff-bound Chargers are 7-2 and have won four straight games. They visit Donna High this week and can clinch at least a share of the District 32-5A title with a win.
Four other teams received votes in this week’s poll. They were Port Isabel, Mercedes, Rio Hondo and Sharyland High.
