Rio Hondo takes title at San Perlita hoops tournament

SAN PERLITA — The Rio Hondo Bobcats were crowned champions at the San Perlita tournament as they beat the Grulla Gators 74-59 in the boys finals on Saturday evening.

The Bobcats’ Albert Adames was the star performer of the game as he led the team in scoring with 17 points.

Both teams competed well early on, proving their worth. However, the Bobcats’ hounding defense eventually took control of the game as it slowed down the pace of Grulla’s offense with a stifling half-court press and capitalized on the Gators’ turnovers.

Rio Hondo coach Jose Guzman noticed his defense performing well and rode it all the way to the title.

“We run a number of defenses and since we were clicking, we stuck with our half-court defense,” he said.

Not only were the Bobcats rolling on defense, but on offense as well. The Bobcats scored a total of 42 points in the second and third quarters, which gave them a comfortable lead.
