HARLINGENBrownsville Hanna was held to just one goal Friday night, fortunately for the Lady Golden Eagles it was enough to fight off a tough Lady Cardinals team had a multitude of chances to win.

“It was an intense and physical game, and emotions were running high in all parts of the field. Luckily our girls were able to put one in,” said Brownsville Hanna head coach Jose Morales. “We were fortunate because we’ve been struggling. They out shot us in the first half, we were able to dominate, but we weren’t able to take shots.

“Right now we’re fighting for third and fourth place, but we have a lot of games to go. Every game is a surprise and today we expected a close game.”

Despite the loss, it was Harlingen that started the game as the aggressor. Forward Sami Quilantan was able to get past the Hanna defense and take a few shots on goal, with two going just wide of the frame.

Another opportunity came at the six-minute mark when Quilantan raced past Hanna’s back four and went straight at Hanna’s goalkeeper only to see the shot blocked.

With most of the possession on their side, Hanna was able get on the scoreboard with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game.

Hanna’s Adrienne Davis was on the receiving end of a corner kick and slotted past Harlingen’s diving keeper.

“Davis is an excellent player and really had a good game tonight,” said Morales. “She took over the teams, dribbled everywhere and led us tonight.”

The Lady Cardinals play San Benito Tuesday at Bobby Morrow Stadium. Meanwhile, the Lady Golden Eagles Host Brownsville Lopez next Friday at Sams Memorial Stadium.

NOTE: In an earlier game, the Brownville Hanna boys defeated Harlingen 4-1.
