Sub-6A’s top boys, girls teams to be recognized at All-Valley awards

Six of the Rio Grande Valley’s most talented sports teams are nominees for the Sub-6A Boys and Girls Teams of the Year honors that will be named on June 14.

The winners will be recognized at the 2016 All-Valley Sports Awards Banquet at DoubleTree Suites in McAllen. Dallas Cowboys legend Drew Pearson is the keynote speaker for the event.

Representatives from the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame, The Monitor, the Brownsville Herald and the Valley Morning Star voted on three nominations for Sub-6A Boys Team of the Year and three nominations for Sub-6A Girls Team of the Year.

Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers is the presenting sponsor of the banquet. Representing the Rio Grande Valley Chevy Dealers are Bert Ogden Chevrolet, Clark Chevrolet, Fiesta Chevrolet, Gillman Chevrolet, Payne Weslaco Motors, Rio Motor Co. and Tipotex Chevrolet.

Pearson, who was inducted into the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor in 2011 after a standout career defined by his performances in the clutch, will highlight the function hosted by RGVSports.com in conjunction with the RGV Sports Hall of Fame.

The awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m. and recognizes team and individual standouts in multiple sports over the past year. Tickets are $40. All nominees get in free.

The nominees for Sub-6A Boys Team of the Year:

>> Edinburg Vela basketball: The SaberCats went 35-4 and reached the Class 5A state semifinals. Vela was the first Valley school to go to state in boys basketball since 2009.

>> Progreso soccer: The Red Ants finished with a school-record 22 wins in advancing to the Class 4A state championship game. Before this season, Progreso soccer had never been as far as the regional semifinals.

>> Brownsville Porter soccer: The Cowboys compiled an overall record of 28-0-1 in winning the Class 5A state championship.

The nominees for Sub-6A Girls Team of the Year.

>> Sharyland High golf: The Lady Rattlers won the District 31-5A championship and advanced to the state tournament for the fourth consecutive year, medaling with a third-place finish. The Lady Rattlers finished second at the regional tournament to earn their bid to state.

>> Sharyland High soccer: The Lady Rattlers went undefeated in District 31-5A en route to the league championship and advanced to the Class 5A regional semifinals.

>> Rio Hondo softball: The Lady Bobcats were 26-4 this season and went undefeated en route to a District 32-4A championship. Rio Hondo was ranked fifth in the state in the coaches’ poll.
