District 32-6A golf tourney tees off today

The Lady Eagles will now look to successfully defend their title starting today at Tony Butler Golf Course in Harlingen, with Lucio, once again, expected to lead the charge.

The tournament runs through Tuesday with teams teeing off at 8 a.m. each day.

Lucio was exceptional at Tony Butler earlier this year at the San Benito Invitational where she captured individual gold and helped lead her team to victory.

But while the Lady Eagles may be favorites to repeat as league champs, Los Fresnos, Harlingen High and Brownsville Veterans are a few competitors that may have something to say about that.

The Lady Falcons, led by Briana Garza, match up well against Hanna as does Harlingen, which is led by Hannah Greer, who finished in third place behind Lucio at the San Benito tourney.

On the boys side of things, Brownsville Veterans enters today as the defending champions, but Brownsville Hanna, who narrowly lost last year, is expected to be a prime contender to dethrone the Chargers.

Just like their female counterparts, the Hanna boys did well at the San Benito Invitational, taking home the team title in a dominating fashion.

Led by Alex Cortez, who took home individual gold, the Eagles cruised past second place San Benito and third place Los Fresnos.

However, the Greyhounds played quite well during their meet as Michael Robles, Daniel Guerra, Manuel Zapata, Aaron Gonzales and Christian Cavazos all stepped up.

At stake the next two days is a chance to qualify for the Region IV-6A tournament, which is being held at Republic Golf Course in San Antonio. The boys’ tournament is April 11-12 while the girls’ is set for April 13-14.

The top two finishers at the district meet qualify for regionals along with the first and second place individuals not on a qualifying team.

The state golf tournament is set for April 25-26 at Legacy Hills Golf Course in Georgetown.
