Belinda Treviño has resigned as Edinburg Vela’s softball coach, according to several parents of players on the team.

Treviño and assistant Gilbert Martinez tendered their resignations Monday, according to those parents. Treviño, who had been with the program since the school opened in 2012, could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Lottie Zarate, the girls athletic coordinator at Edinburg Vela, declined comment Tuesday following the Lady SaberCats’ 15-0 win over Mission Veterans Memorial on Tuesday in five innings.

Joe Ortiz, previously a JV light coach, is filling in on an interim basis.

Under Treviño’s watch, the Lady SaberCats have made the playoffs in each of their first three seasons. They closed out the regular season with a 21-0 record, including a 12-0 run in district to win the 31-5A title.

Edinburg Vela was bounced in the opening round of the playoffs, losing two straight games to Edcouch-Elsa.

The Lady SaberCats were off to a 4-1 start in district this year, with their lone loss coming against Sharyland Pioneer.
