Cowboys’ Gutierrez earns TAPSE all-state honors

Porter’s Jorge Gutierrez was one of the top running backs in the Rio Grande Valley.

Now he adds another accolade to his impressive senior football season.

Gutierrez has been chosen as a member of the 2015 Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class 5A all-state football team.

The Cowboys’ running back was chosen as a part of the second-team offense. The senior finished the regular season with more than 2,000 yards on the ground and 25 touchdowns, both of which lead District 32-5A. Gutierrez was also chosen as the district’s offense player of the year and was on The Herald’s All-Metro first-team.

“It’s amazing, it’s a very big accomplishment. All the hard work and the dedication of my teammates, my offensive line, the coaches,” Gutierrez said. “It’s nice to be recognized out there. It feels great; it feels like I left my mark somewhere.

“I’m proud to be a Cowboy, I’ll always be a Cowboy.”

The senior led Porter to a 6-4 record and the first playoff appearance since 2008.

“It’s nice to get some recognition for our kids down here in the Valley, especially being a statewide honor, that’s huge,” Porter coach Tom Campos said. “I believe he deserves every bit of that credit. He was the true MVP of the team. You take that kid off the team, the team doesn’t perform the way they do. That’s exactly how we felt about Jorge.”

Campos credited Gilbert Gonzalez, Porter’s running backs coach, and the blue-collar hard work Gutierrez did to take care of himself throughout the season to achieve such a feat. The senior averaged 7 yards per carry and had more than 300 carries on the season.

The senior running back also was more of a leader by example on the field, choosing to let his play speak for him.

“On the field, he was a kid that wasn’t a rah-rah guy,” Campos said. “He wasn’t giving pregame speeches or anything like that, he didn’t act that way. He was more, ‘Let me show you what I can do on the field.’”

Gutierrez wants to play at the next level, and with these numbers he should be able to find a place to do so. The senior is in contact with a few coaches but is still weighting his options.

Campos was happy to add another merit to the tremendous season for the Cowboys.

“I’m thrilled,” the Porter coach said. “It’s another great honor, and this year has been full of accolades for Porter. I think this is the icing on the cake for the program.”
