After a season of solid outings, the finalists for Girls Team of the Year has been narrowed down to six.

One team will be chosen for Class 6A and another will be chosen for sub-6A, with the winners to be announced at the eighth annual RGVSports.com & Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame awards ceremony next week.

For a third consecutive year, RGVSports.com and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame are teaming up to honor the best performances of the 2014-15 season in Rio Grande Valley high school athletics.

The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Col. Philip J. Yeckel Memorial Auditorium on the campus of Marine Military Academy in Harlingen. Admission is free.

The finalists in Class 6A are the McAllen High volleyball team, the Los Fresnos soccer team and the San Benito softball squad. In sub-6A, the finalists are the Mission Veterans volleyball team, the Lyford softball team and the Edinburg Vela basketball team.

The McHi volleyball team won the district title in arguably the toughest league in the Valley. The Lady Bulldogs beat out top-10 teams in McAllen Rowe and McAllen Memorial to win the District 30-6A crown before advancing to the fourth round in the playoffs. The team finished with a 38-6 overall record.

In the lower Valley, the District 32-6A champion Los Fresnos soccer team went 27-4, advanced five rounds in the playoffs and became only the third Valley girls soccer team to reach a regional final. The team wound up one victory shy of advancing to the state tournament, losing to San Antonio Reagan 2-1 in the Region IV-6A final. The Lady Falcons were ranked No. 1 in the final Valley’s Top 10 poll for the second time in three years.

The San Benito softball team showed why it is the premier softball squad in the Valley and, with any luck, the Lady Greyhounds could quite possibly finish the season as the best softball team in the entire state. For the second time in three seasons, the Lady ‘Hounds qualified for the state tournament in Austin, where they enter this weekend’s state semifinals as the top-ranked team in Texas.

The Lady Greyhounds breezed through the regular season with only one loss, then calmly navigated their way through the postseason with only two losses. On Friday, they take on Lewisville for a chance to become the only Valley softball team to play for a state championship.

On the sub-6A front, the Mission Veterans Memorial volleyball team made its mark by finishing the season with a 34-7 record and advancing to the fourth round of the playoffs. The team lost only one non-district game all year and was district champions.

The Lyford softball team was also impressive this past season, winning the District 32-3A title then going three rounds deep in the postseason.

Finally, the Edinburg Vela basketball team earned its stripes by finishing the season with a 24-9 mark, including a perfect 12-0 record in district en route to winning a second-straight league championship.
