LA FERIA — Frigid conditions didn’t show any signs of slowing down La Feria‘s annual soccer tournament Thursday afternoon.

With temperatures hovering around the mid to low 40’s, 24 teams from across the valley showed up to compete in the annual competition.

“So far everything has gone as planned,” said La Feria soccer head coach and tournament organizer Norma Tamez. “Hopefully the weather can stay just as good for us tomorrow and everything will stay as scheduled.”

With 18 games being played Thursday fans can expect to have another health dose of soccer games today.

LA FERIA, LYFORD GAME:

After defeating La Joya 2-0 earlier in the day, the Lionettes lined for their second match of the tournament against the Lyford Lady Bulldogs. However, the outcome was same as freshman wonder girl Jacqi Caballero guided the team to victory after scoring four goals in the 4-0 win.

“I think we’re finally starting to click on offense and defense with the changes we’ve made,” said head coach Tamez. “We’re running more of an offensive formation and it’s helped us get to the goal more.”

The freshman striker netted two goals before the half and two after.

“She actually play’s center mid position, but she’s working hard at being a forward,” said Tamez. “She training hard and listening on how to get into better position, plus she’s got great ball control.”

The Lionettes kept pressure on the Lady Bulldogs’ defensive line all day ensuring that the La Feria goalkeeper was sparingly used.

The home side will start play today at 10 a.m. against a Weslaco East JV squad that started the tournament with a 2-0 loss to La Joya.

SAN BENITO, DONNA NORTH JV:

The Lady Greyhounds started 2015 on the right foot by handily beating the Donna North Jv squad 5-0 in their tournament opener.

Head Coach Eddie Gonzalez spoke about the optimism he has for the in the new season.

I think we start off a bit slow but then we started moving the ball around and looking for some open spaces,” said Coach Gonzalez.

“They did well and I’m very excited about this year and the opportunity we have to compete in our new district.”

Isamar Davila started the scoring for the Lady ‘Hounds as she tipped in the ball from close range.

Adriana Moreno made the score 2-0 when she cored with a strong low shot that got passed the keeper.

Both Davila and Moreno would get on the score sheet again to lead the team in the decisive victory.

“It’s always good to get off to a good start, and the best part about this game was that we had the opportunity to play a lot of young players and get them some experience,” said Gonzalez.

“That’s what these tournaments for, to get these younger players some experience and start developing the program.”

The Lady Greyhounds open today’s play at 9 a.m. against Idea Frontier and at close pool play at 11 a.m. against Eagle Pass Winn.
