#RGVWeek2 Saturday Roundup: McAllen Memorial bounces back from slow start to beat Economedes

Trevor Speights ran for 226 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries as McAllen Memorial bounced back from a slow start to cruise by Edinburg Economedes 56-21 on Saturday at Cats Stadium in Edinburg.

McAllen Memorial coach Bill Littleton said the afternoon heat led to defensive mistakes that left the Mustangs up just 21-14 at halftime. The miscues included poor tackling and not playing the proper gaps against Econ’s run-heavy attack.

“I wasn’t real pleased with the way we played in the first half, but it was awful hot,” Littleton said. “The kids were worried about the heat more than playing, I think, sometimes. It was extremely hot.”

The defense returned to form in the second half, allowing Memorial to pull away.

DJ Johnson, playing his first game of the season after sitting out Week 1 due to a concussion, had three catches for 112 yards and two scores. Quarterback Jonathan Sanchez completed 6 of 11 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

“I was really pleased with the offense and the defense in the second half,” Littleton said. “They played really well.”

ODESSA PERMIAN 63, MISSION VETERANS 7: At Odessa, the Patriots lost to Panthers for a second straight year.

At halftime, Mission Veterans trailed 35-0. Roman De Leon scored on a 21-yard reception with 14.8 left in the game to avoid the shutout.

Last season, Mission Vets lost the matchup 44-8.
