RAYMONDVILLE — If you’re a Bearkat supporter the names of Sergio Gonzales and David Marroquin should bring pleasant smile to your face.

In fact, the abilities that both Gonzales and Marroquin have exhibited this season have definitely brought a smile to Raymondville head coach Frank Cantu’s face as well.

“Those are the big play guys. When big plays happen it’s to those guys,” said Cantu. “Sergio has come up with some really big catches for us and David is kind of a double threat. He had a big run for us during the Kingsville game and he had another crucial touchdown for us against Grulla.”

This season Marroquin leads the Bearkats with an astonishing seven touchdowns, putting up an eye opening 44 points on the scoreboard in just three games. Last week against Kingsville Marroquin scored on a 55-yard run that gave the Bearkats an early lead. In total Marroquin has rushed for 220 yards on 24 carries.

“Offensively I think we’re doing really well,” said Marroquin. “The offensive line has done a great job blocking for us and holding the passing block and giving us room to get to the end zone.”

“David is very explosive,” added teammate Gonzales. “When the offensive line gives his a hole nobody can catch him.”

Defensively the senior also plays cornerback for the Bearkats, last year Marroquin played middle linebacker, but with his speed Cantu saw other positions for him to fill.

“You talk about a kid you can use anywhere, that’s him,” said Cantu. “He’s just so fast we decided to put him in the secondary and help us out there.”

At 6’1” Gonzales’ size is easy to spot. Whether you’re on the sideline or on the bleachers Gonzales’ ability on the field is easily recognizable. However after landing awkwardly in a game against Grulla Gonzales’ time table for return was up in the air. But much to his teams surprise he was ready for last week’s game where he made some uncharacteristic drops.

“Sergio has been a big part up to now and he’s going to be a big part the rest of the way,” said Cantu. “Against Kingsville he played every play on offense and he played every play on defense. He had a few drops against Kingsville the he normally doesn’t do but we’re working on getting his confidence back up”

“Sergio has been doing great,” added Marroquin. “He’s been using his size to his advantage and its been working.”
