The Sugar Bowl trophy has officially found a new home this season.

After spending the past two years in Santa Rosa, the golden trophy is heading to La Villa after the Cardinals (1-3) rushed their way to a 43-25 victory over Santa Rosa (0-3) on Friday night.

“It’s huge. It’s the Battle of Highway 107 and with all the hype,” said La Villa Coach Shawn Alvarez after the win. “We were winless, we hadn’t won a game, and we played a lot of really good teams. Santa Rosa’s a really good football team and we knew we were going to have to play a really good game. We’re finally getting it and playing some defense.”

Senior quarterback Macario “Mac” Perez led his team with 175 yards rushing and three touchdowns while passing for 49 yards and one touchdown.

GRULLA 20, LYTLE 14: At Laredo, junior quarterback Fabian Anzaldua rushed for 196 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Diego Mata rushed for 76 yards for the Gators (2-2), who trailed 7-6 at halftime. Miguel Flores added a touchdown.

The Gators gave up 201 total yards to Lytle (1-3).

PROGRESO 40, HEBBRONVILLE 15: At Progreso, the Red Ants secured their first win of the season (1-2). In their last two games, Progreso has scored 70 points. In all of 2014, they scored 78.

CLASS 6A

EDINBURG ECONOMEDES 20, LA JOYA JUAREZ-LINCOLN 10: At Edinburg, the Jaguars overcame a 10-6 halftime deficit to win their second straight game and improve their record to 2-2.

MISSION HIGH 49, EDINBURG HIGH 6: At Mission, Mission High scored three times on defense and once on special teams, cruising to a blowout win against Edinburg High.

The Eagles controlled the ball on the ground offensively, with Juan Salazar scoring twice and Steven De Leon scoring once. Henry Morales returned an interception for a touchdown and also scored via a reverse on a fake punt.

The defense held Edinburg to about 92 total yards, coach Mario Peña said, moving Mission to 2-2.

“This is definitely the way we wanted to end up our non-district schedule,” Peña said. “Defensively, we had a very good night.”

Edinburg High falls to 0-4.

CORPUS CHRISTI CARROLL 47, McALLEN HIGH 14: At Corpus Christi, Carroll scored on a 70-yard run by Noah Lisk 17 seconds into the game and never looked back, routing McHI.

Carroll led 40-0 at halftime. The Bulldogs finish non-district play 1-3.

LAREDO UNITED 64, McALLEN ROWE 48: At McAllen, Rowe trailed 44-6 at halftime before the offense got going down the stretch against United. The Warriors dropped to 1-2.

CLASS 5A

SHARYLAND HIGH 16, LAREDO ALEXANDER 14: At Laredo, the Rattlers survived a missed field goal attempt as time expired to beat the Bulldogs.

With 1:15 left in the game, Sharyland (2-2) regained the lead when Manny Campos connected with Seth Carter on a deep pass on a 4th-and-8 from the 40. That helped the Rattlers avenge last year’s 36-35 loss at home that snapped their 26-game regular-season winning streak.

“It could’ve gone either way,” Sharyland coach Ron Adame said. “It wasn’t a clean game on both parts, but we’ll take it. A win is a win.”

SHARYLAND PIONEER 27, LA FERIA 10: At Mission, the Diamondbacks overcame a sluggish first half to record their fourth straight win.

Pioneer (4-0) trailed 7-3 before Alec Garcia scored on a 43-yard run right before intermission. Then in the second half, Sal Gonzalez scored from 20 yards out, and James Resendez caught a 25-yard TD pass in the corner of the end zone from Alejandro Ramirez to pull ahead for good.

“I think it shows maturity and leadership that we didn’t panic” from a slow start,” Pioneer coach Jason Wheeler said. “Last year with our young team, we probably would’ve panicked. But we’ll learn from it and keep trying to get better.”

CORPUS CHRISTI KING 42, RIO GRANDE CITY 17: At Rio Grande City, the Rattlers dropped to 2-2.

Jason Perez found Aaron Leal on a 45-yard TD pass to bring it to within 13-7, but RGC struggled to hang close with C.C. King (4-0).

CLASS 4A

PORT ISABEL 14, VALLEY VIEW 7: At Port Isabel, the Tarpons took advantage of a few breaks and grinded it out with their running game, and held on after a late Valley View score to defeat the Tigers.

The Port Isabel defense helped give the offense multiple chances after they forced six turnovers against Valley View, the last one to seal the win. Carlos Orduna had two interceptions, Omar Silva added another, and the Tarpons recovered three fumbles.

Valley View scored late in the fourth quarter when Jorge Aguilar hit David Gonzalez on a 20-yard TD pass to cut the deficit in half.

“We tried different kids at quarterback, we’re trying to find the right guy,” Valley View coach Carlos Saenz said. “We’re trying to run this high-tempo spread offense and we tried to just stay in the game.”

RIO HONDO 30, HIDALGO 0: At Rio Hondo, the Pirates fell to 1-2.

Rio Hondo quarterback Daniel Flores completed 8 of 25 passes for 143 yards and 3 TDs with one interception. He also rushed 20 times for 105 yards.

Rio Hondo (2-1) did not allow Hidalgo quarterback Pedro Quiroz to complete any of his 17 passing attempts for positive yardage, and held the Pirates to only 81 total yards, all on the ground.
