Porter suffers first loss of season

Porter played well during the first half but was not able to hold off a talented UANL team during the second half in a 30-10 loss Saturday in Week 3 at Sams Memorial Stadium.

“It was a good game, it was a physical game,” Porter coach Tom Campos said. “We got to do all the things we wanted to do, we just didn’t come up with the victory.”

The Cowboys kept it close and did a few more things than they had during the first two games of the season, throwing the ball more, kicking an onside kick, twice going for it on fourth down and trying out a few wrinkles they practiced during the past few weeks.

Porter grew in confidence from its play and was down 17-10 at halftime. Jorge Gutierrez scored the Cowboys’ lone touchdown on the ground and Angel Silva added a field goal in the first half.

Gutierrez finished with 205 yards on 27 carries and the one touchdown.

“I told the kids before the game (that) to be a playoff team you have to play in all types of elements against all types of opponents,” Campos said. “We didn’t bat an eye, we just didn’t capitalize on a few opportunities.”

UANL scored a touchdown during the third quarter and added a late fourth-quarter touchdown but missed an extra point for their final total.

“We played four quarters, it never got away from us,” Campos said. “The kids fought to the very end, I thought that showed a lot of character. (UANL) always brings a good team with them, and they got the better of us today.”
