McAllen Memorial still atop Top 10 poll; Roma debuts

There’s no stopping McAllen Memorial three weeks into the season.

Heading into Week 4, Trevor Speights and the Mustangs remain atop the RGVSports.com Top 10 poll. McAllen Memorial, like the previous three weeks, received six out of seven first-place votes to stay in first place with a 3-0 record. The Mustangs dominated San Benito 63-44 on Saturday in a battle of two Top-10 teams.

Edinburg Vela received the other first-place vote and stays at No. 2. The SaberCats ho-hummed their way to a 37-7 win over La Joya High last week.

Nos. 3 and No. 4 in the poll are the same in Los Fresnos and Harlingen High, respectively. The Falcons are 3-0 for the first time under coach Clint Finley after beating PSJA North handily. Harlingen High improved to 1-1 last week with an impressive 46-21 beatdown of Top 10 teammate McAllen High.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial jumped again in the poll, this time from No. 7 to No. 5. In two weeks, Brownsville Vets has moved up five spots. The Chargers are 3-0 after beating Edinburg High.

Weslaco High fell from No. 5 to No. 6 after its loss to Corpus Christi King.

San Benito, despite its loss to McAllen Memorial, moved up a spot to No. 7 with La Joya Palmview falling out of the Top 10 after its defeat to Rio Grande City in overtime.

Sharyland High moved up two spots to No. 8 after claiming its first win of the season against Brownsville Rivera, and Roma made its debut in this season’s poll at No. 9. The Gladiators are 3-0 this season with wins over La Joya High, Laredo Cigarroa and Uvalde.

McAllen High dropped a spot to No. 10. The Bulldogs are 1-2.

Other teams receiving votes were Weslaco East, Brownsville Hanna, Port Isabel and Edcouch-Elsa.
