HARLINGEN — It may be one of the grueling parts of summer, but there is no time to waste when it comes to getting better.

Harlingen athletes have a chance to do just that the rest of the month during the Harlingen High School strength and conditioning program.

The program is led by the Harlingen High School strength and conditioning coach Monty Woodall, athletic coordinator Manny Gomez and several assistant coaches.

Workouts began last week and are voluntary. They’re held Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. which is what the UIL allows for these types of workouts.

Despite the work, it’s more than just physical workouts for most.

“The program entails just a lot of conditioning for our young athletes, which we try to emphasis physically, mentally and socially,” Gomez said. “It’s for all three phases which is their mind, body and definitely your soul. “

The camp is free and all are welcome to attend says Gomez.

Many have taken the chance to take part in the program which features medicine balls, weights and running.

“We have kids ranging from incoming fifth graders to our veteran athletes. They’re all out here getting better,” Gomez said. “The ones who want to improve themselves and get better are out here.”

The program has been running for about six years now and is where Gomez believes everything starts when preparing for the Fall season.

“The kids are earning opportunities and those big Friday night plays, they’re making them right here,” Gomez said. “Everyone is embracing it and we’re taking it to the next level. Coach Monty Woodall has got a great mind with great ideas.”

The camp will conclude at the end of July.

A week later, the Cardinals will begin two-a-day practices.

Until then, the Cardinals will live in the moment.

“We’re able to go two hours a day and we’re embracing it all right now to be prepared for Aug. 10,” Gomez said. “We’ll give the athletes four weeks here, then some time off and get prepared for the season.”
