RAYMONDVILLE — Six weeks of the Texas high school fooball season are in the books and the Bearkats have played three tough opponents.
This week that doesn’t change. The Raymondville Bearkats welcome the sixth-ranked Sinton Pirates tonight to Burnett Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
The much-anticipated match up against the Pirates closes the Bearkat’s non-district schedule before heading into their 16-4A DII district opener against Orange Grove next week.
At 2-1 there is no need to panic.
While the team hasn’t had the number of games they would have hoped for by now, signs of the chemistry and solidarity between the players have the Bearkats’ optimism high at just the right time.
Offensively, the Kats have produced 1,049 yards, with 657 of them accounted for on the ground.
Last season, Sinton defeated Raymondville 20-13 at Pirate Stadium before marching four-deep into the state semifinals.
However that was last year. But this year the team looks just as good.
With a record of 4-0, the Pirates come into tonight’s game with an explosive offensive attack that has produced more than 1,900 yards, with duel threat quarterback Colton Cohea leading the charge.
Last week, the Bearkats lost the first game of the season to a tough Kingsville King team, however some of the team has already erased the loss and look to start fresh against Sinton.
“We have to just forget about what happened last weekend and focus on this week,” said defensive end Daniel Garcia.
“We are going to rely on each other because we are brothers out here and I know that we can get the job done.”
“I wouldn’t necessarily forget about everything that happened last week,” added linebacker Ricardo Guajardo Jr.
“The game didn’t go as planned but we just have to learn from our mistakes. We come out here and work hard and put in work. We do everything that we can to win.”
“I have faith in my team and I believe very strongly that we can accomplish anything that is put in front of us.”
While, on paper, the odds might be stacked against Raymondville tonight, one thing is certain- both team will show up to win.
From the previous three encounters Sinton leads the short series 2-1.
“We had some very good games against them,”said Raymondville head coach frank Cantu. “We just want to play our very best because I feel we’ve got some weapons as well and I feel we can do more than keep up.
“I stress to the guys lets just play our best and play mistake free football and let see what the scoreboard says at the end.”
