San Benito makes big leap in RGVSports.com Top 10 poll

San Benito made the biggest jump in this week’s RGVSports.com Top 10 high school football poll heading into Week 8.

With their impressive 22-21 win at Harlingen High last week, the Greyhounds leapt from ninth to fourth in the poll. The Cardinals dropped from third to sixth.

San Benito and Harlingen High is each 4-2. Each plays fellow Top 10 teammates this week. San Benito plays Brownsville Veterans Memorial and Harlingen High plays Los Fresnos.

McAllen Memorial remains No. 1 with six of seven first-place votes. The Mustangs are 7-0 and have a bye this week. They beat La Joya Juarez-Lincoln 63-10 last week.

Edinburg Vela is still No. 2, claiming the other first-place vote. The SaberCats are coming off a string of impressive wins against three of District 31-5A’s top teams in Sharyland High, Roma and Sharyland Pioneer. Vela is undefeated going into this week’s game against Valley View.

Los Fresnos is now third and undefeated at 6-0. Weslaco High is fifth with a 4-2 record and plays Edinburg North this week after a bye last week.

Brownsville Veterans is seventh and 6-0 after taking care of Brownsville Hanna on Saturday. Sharyland High is eighth and coming off a bye.

Weslaco East is in ninth at 5-1. And Donna High regains its footing in the poll by coming back in at No. 10. The Redskins are 5-1 and coming off a big win over reigning District 32-5A champ Mercedes.
