While McAllen Memorial and Edinburg Vela sit firmly in the top two spots in this week’s RGVSports.com Top 10 high school football poll, there was plenty of falling and rising throughout the rest of the rankings heading into Week 9.
The Mustangs, again, claimed six of the seven first-place votes and are 7-0 coming off a bye and heading into this week’s rival game against McAllen High. The SaberCats are also unscathed at 8-0 following their 48-19 win against Valley View last week.
But with District 32-6A once again a dogfight, with four teams having just one loss each, that made for subtle movement through the middle to bottom of the poll.
San Benito (5-2) jumps up a spot to third after beating fellow-top 10 teammate Brownsville Veterans Memorial 40-21 last week. The Chargers (6-1) are in seventh place in the poll after being handed their first loss of the season.
Los Fresnos fell from third to fourth after falling to Harlingen High 25-18 last week. That was the Falcons’ first loss of the season. The Cardinals moved up a spot to fifth and are 5-2.
Weslaco High returned from its bye with a 42-10 rout of Edinburg North and is in sixth place. The Panthers are 5-2.
Weslaco East had a bye last week and moved up one spot to eighth. The Wildcats are 5-1 going into The Monitor’s Game of the Week on Thursday against PSJA North in a contest with District 31-6A title implications.
Donna High moved up a spot to ninth following its 63-0 rout of PSJA High last week. The Redskins are 5-2 and are the only undefeated team at 4-0 in District 32-5A.
Mission Veterans Memorial re-enters the poll at No. 10 after its comeback win against Sharyland Pioneer last week. The Patriots are 5-2.
Other teams receiving consideration for the Top 10 were Roma, La Joya Palmview, Rio Hondo, PSJA North and Sharyland High. The 3-4 Rattlers find themselves out of the Top 10 for the first time this season after their 18-7 loss at Roma last week.
