Metro-Area Athletic Capsules: IDEA Frontier falls short of playoffs

MONTE ALTO — The IDEA Frontier Lady Chargers missed out on a trip to the Class 3A state playoffs Saturday as they came up short in a play-in match against Lyford 25-20, 25-13, 25-17 at the Monte Alto gym.

The four teams advancing to the postseason from District 32-3A now are district champion Monte Alto, Santa Rosa, Edinburg IDEA Quest and Lyford. Monte Alto captured the 32-3A championship with an 8-0 record, and Santa Rosa was the district runner-up at 6-2.

IDEA Frontier, Edinburg Quest and Lyford all finished district play at 2-6, thus creating Saturday’s play-in scenario.

The Lady Chargers were directed this season by first-year coach Cassie Hinojosa.

Cross Country

St. Joseph concludes season at state meet

The St. Joseph Bloodhounds girls cross country team finished 11th and the boys team placed 16th in the TAPPS state cross country meet Saturday.

The top girls runners for SJA were Gaby Garza, who placed 34th in a time of 16 minutes, 20 seconds, and Carolina Del Pozo, who took 43rd in 16:42. The top boys runners were Antonio Salum (62nd, 22:36) and Jose Luis Almaza (72nd, 23:10).
