Three-time district champion Moises Campos was the Valley’s top individual finisher in any class at the UIL state cross country championships Saturday in Round Rock.

The Hidalgo senior, who clocked in at 16:45.44, finished sixth in the Class 4A boys division, and thus earned his first state medal.

“All the accolades he gets, he deserves,” Pirates coach Zeke Morales said. “He’s a great student, a great individual, and the kind of kid you want to clone, if you could. Just very happy for what he did.”

Campos, who placed third at the Region IV-4A meet last month, helped the Pirates place eighth in the 4A boys team division Saturday.

“This is the cherry on top,” Morales said. “Hopefully we could do it again next year. The bar’s been set.

“Everyone’s coming back, except Moi, who’s a senior. So the expectations are there.”

By placing 10th, Mercedes’ Jonathan Reyes (16:52.75) also medaled in the 5A boys division. Sharyland High’s Martin Gonzalez (17:06.90) was the closest runner in 14th place.

Rio Grande City’s Ana Bautista (19:49.30) fell short, placing 11th, and Edcouch-Elsa’s Krysta Martinez (20:01.70) came in 17th in the girls 5A category.

In 6A, Edinburg High’s Rolando Ramon (16:47.87, 12th) and Edinburg North’s Beth Ramos (19:39.94) were the Valley’s closest runners to medaling in their respective divisions.

Edinburg IDEA Quest’s Valery Tobias (12:48.91, 18th) had the top finish for a Valley 3A runner.
