Notebook: Cards, Falcons, ’Hounds on verge of sharing 32-6A title again

MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

This past week, Los Fresnos, Harlingen and San Benito each punched their tickets to the postseason with wins.

The Falcons handed Brownsville Veterans its third-straight loss in a 35-10 romp, while the Cardinals defeated Lopez 48-0 and San Benito narrowly escaped Harlingen South 17-13 thanks to a pair of penalties that negated a pair of Hawks touchdowns.

For Harlingen, Los Fresnos and San Benito, it’s easy this week: win and you take home a share of the District 32-6A championship for the second straight year.

Each of them shared the title along with Brownsville Rivera last year. Nobody will win outright because they all gained victories over each other.

Los Fresnos beat San Benito, but fell to Harlingen, which lost to San Benito in the annual Battle of the Arroyo.

This week, the Greyhounds face Brownsville Rivera, Los Fresnos faces Hanna and Harlingen clashes with Harlingen South in the annual Bird Bowl.

SO YOU’RE SAYING THERE’S A CHANCE: Harlingen South head coach Lanny Wilson talked the last couple of weeks about his team holding its fate in its own hands.

After falling to San Benito last week in a disappointing 17-13 loss, that isn’t the case anymore.

The Hawks not only need to upset Harlingen this week, but they need Brownsville Veterans to fall to lowly Brownsville Lopez.

Despite the slim odds, head coach Lanny Wilson and the Hawks’ confidence isn’t wavering

“You know, I’ve never had a team quit on me and I’ve done this for a lot of years; we won’t quit,” Wilson said. “All we worry about is things that we can control and whatever we can’t control we’re not going to worry about.”

NO TURNOVERS, NO PROBLEM: The Harlingen defense picked up its first shutout of the season with a 48-0 drubbing of Brownsville Lopez.

After forcing eight turnovers during the two games prior, the Cards did not force a fumble or an interception.

They did, however, hold Lopez to 75 yards of total offense.
