One week remains in the high school football season. While teams shift around for playoff positioning, there is minimal movement in the RGVSports.com Top 10 poll heading into Week 11.
The top two teams, as they have been on the season, are the same. McAllen Memorial is No. 1 at 9-0 after last week’s 69-21 win over La Joya Palmview. The Mustangs claimed six of seven first-place votes and close their regular season this week at Mission High.
The other vote went to Edinburg Vela, which is 9-0 and had a bye last week. The SaberCats play fellow Top-10 teammate Mission Veterans Memorial in their regular season finale this week. Vela can win the District 31-5A title outright with a win.
Nos. 3 and 4 in this week’s poll moved around. Harlingen High (7-2) replaces San Benito (7-2) at No. 3. The Greyhounds dropped a spot to No. 4.
Harlingen High shut out Brownsville Lopes 48-0 last week and San Benito hung on to beat Harlingen South, 17-13.
Los Fresnos remains No. 5 with an 8-1 record. The Falcons beat an impressive Brownsville Veterans Memorial team 35-10 last week.
The bottom five teams remained the same from last week.
Weslaco High is No. 6 at 7-2, and Weslaco East is No. 7 at 8-1. The two rivals face off this week in The Monitor’s Game of the Week. Both are undefeated in District 31-6A play.
Donna High is still No. 8 with a 7-2 record. The Redskins clinched a share of the District 32-5A title last week and can win it outright with a win over Edcouch-Elsa this week.
Donna High has its first district title since 2007.
Mission Veterans Memorial is No. 9 at 7-2. The Patriots can earn a share of the District 31-5A title with a win over Edinburg Vela this week.
Brownsville Veterans Memorial, despite dropping three games in a row, is No. 10. The Chargers are still 6-3, and all three losses have come to teams in the top five of the Top 10 poll.
Mercedes, Roma and La Feria also received Top 10 consideration this week.
