It was a banner day for the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons.
On the strength of multiple wins by Gabriyella Torres and Daniela Murchison, the Lady Tarpons took home the girls title at the 60th annual Sams Relay on Saturday at Sams Memorial Stadium.
Torres won both the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches) and the long jump (17-4 3/4) and Murchison won the discus throw (134-7) and the shot put (43-4).
Port Isabel finished with 78 points, five points better than Edinburg North (73). Los Fresnos finished third (69), followed by Edinburg High (68) and McAllen Rowe (63).
“You always want to come out and do well,” Port Isabel coach Julie Breedlove said. “But if the kids do well individually, its going to show as a team.”
Torres and Murchison are hoping to return to the state meet again this season.
“I’m throwing better than I have (at this point in the season),” Murchison said. “I’m so happy right now (to win).”
Torres was also excited by her performances in the meet.
“I’m actually starting off with the marks that I ended with last year,” she said. “It’s giving me confidence that I can work and progress throughout the year and get better towards the end of the year.
“The Valley record for high jump is 5 feet, 9 inches. I really want to get close to that or tie the record.”
St. Joseph Academy had multiple winners as well.
The TAPPS defending pole vault champion, Megan Lopez, won the pole vault after clearing a height of 10-0. Gaby Garza won two events, the 100 meter hurdles (15.34) and the 200 dash (26.01).
Los Fresnos’ Jaleah Calvillo took the girls triple jump event with a mark of 35-5, and the Lady Falcons took the 400 relay (50.77).
On the boys side, Corpus Christi Carroll took the title with 94 points, Edinburg Vela was second (87) and Weslaco East (82) was third. They were followed by Rivera (65) and Harlingen High (65).
The Los Fresnos boys squad won two events. Pete Perez won the boys triple jump with a mark of 41-5 1/2 and the 800 relay won with a time of 1:31.81.
Rivera also took home two events. Anthony Garza took the 800 run with a time of 1:59.58, and Christian Machuca won the 3,200 with a time of 9:47.49.
Even with a squad that is short on numbers, Port Isabel proved it was a strong competitor.
“It does feel good,” Breedlove said. “I’m really proud of the girls. They’ve really worked hard this year. It gives us some confidence to keep working hard and keep moving up.”
