Edcouch-Elsa scored a 2-1 win over Edinburg Vela on Saturday to complete a best-of-three Class 5A bi-district series in Game 2 at E-E.

“It came down to clutch hitting on our part,” Lady Yellowjackets coach Joey Palacios said. “Defensively our girls made the routine plays. We were at the right place at the right time. Our pitcher (Sarah Rodriguez) was dominant. And credit to the defensive behind her.”

E-E needed a play-in game to earn the fourth seed in District 32-5A. As underdogs, the Lady Yellowjackets won Game 1 on the road. And on Saturday, they returned home to close out the series, setting up an area round battle against Corpus Christi Flour Bluff later this week.

“I’m just proud of the overall effort,” Palacios said. “We just keep finding ways to win ball games. They put the ball in play, but we made the plays defensively.”

Palacios pointed to a catch by right fielder Sieana Ortiz during the fourth inning that helped preserve their lead.

“She snatched a line drive and fired it to second base,” Palacios said. “If she doesn’t make that catch, Vela probably comes through with a double or triple and no one out.”
