STAFF REPORTS
Several Metro-area track & field athletes won individual titles during the area meet and will advance to the Region IV-6A on May 1 and 2 at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
Christian Parales won the 100-meter dash (10.88 seconds) and 200, (21.87), and the 400 relay team took first place (42.79) for Los Fresnos.
Angel Espinoza (167 feet, 8 inches) won the discus event, and Jonathan Herrera (9:47.15) took the 3,200 run for Rivera.
Darren Gonzalez of Lopez (6-0) took the high jump title.
Harlingen High won the boys team title with 96 points, followed by Harlingen South (69), San Benito (68) and Los Fresnos (60).
Advancing to regional in field events was Brandon Frausto of Lopez and Felipe Flores of Brownsville Veterans Memorial in the long jump, Pete Perez of Los Fresnos and Sammy Orive of Rivera in the triple jump, and Alex Herrera of Hanna in the high jump.
Also advancing to regional was Anthony Garza of Rivera in the 400 and 3,200 run, Christian Machuca of Rivera in the 1,600 and 3,200, Edward Velasquez of Rivera in the 110 hurdles, Eddie Guzman of Brownsville Veterans in the 400 and 800, and Los Fresnos in the 1,600 relay.
On the girls side, Jaleah Calvillo took home the triple jump (36-08) and the 100 hurdles (15.67) for Los Fresnos. She also advanced in the high jump.
Clarissa Chavez (123-1 1/2) won the discus event for Brownsville Veterans Memorial and also advanced in the shot put.
Weslaco High took the girls team title with 149 points, Los Fresnos was second (89), followed by Brownsville Veterans (64) and Harlingen South (60).
Advancing to regional in field events was Valeria Granados of Los Fresnos in the shot put and discus, Alondra Escobar of Los Fresnos in the long jump, Brandy Endsley of Rivera in the triple jump and Jackie Kingsbury of Los Fresnos in the high jump.
Also advancing to regional were Krista Lopez of Brownsville Veterans in the 200, Haley Allen of Brownsville Veterans and Reyna Medrano of Lopez in the 400, Sofia Salinas of Hanna and Rachel Ysaguirre of Brownsville Veterans in the 800, Samantha Hernandez of Lopez in the 1,600, Mariana Sanchez of Hanna in the 3,200, Alyssa Salazar of Los Fresnos in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Michaela Artega of Brownsville Veterans in the 300 hurdles, Los Fresnos in the 400 and 800 relays, and Brownsville Veterans in the 800 and 1,600 relays.
