Bouls, Lara key South’s 2-0 win vs San Benito

HARLINGEN — Ruayda Bouls and Jasmine Lara gave Harlingen South a much needed 2-0 victory against the Lady Greyhounds on Friday night at Boggus Stadium.

“San Benito plays great defensively and made it hard for us to find open spaces and take shots,” said Harlingen South head coach Omar Pedroza. “I’m happy with the way we played, but we have another tough game against Harlingen on Monday, which is our last game (of the regular season) before the playoffs.

“We had a lot of shots on goal with a couple hitting the goal post but those things happen.”

The star senior Bouls opened the scoring with a perfectly placed shot that got by San Benito’s goalkeeper Kassandra Lopez with 23 minutes left in the first.

The Lady Hawks kept Lopez busy the entire first half amassing eight shots on goal with another two rattling the frame. Lopez played an outstanding first half managing to keep the game 1-0 going into the half.

In the second the Lady Hawks went down to 10 players after junior standout Amber Ray was sent off with 25 minutes left in the second half. The red card complicated the game for South before teammate Jasmine Lara scored the insurance goal with 12 minutes remaining.

The central defender slotted home the goal from a loose ball inside the box, assuring Harlingen South of the win.

“I’m proud of my girls. They keep working hard, they’re learning and gaining some valuable experience,” said San Benito head coach Eddie Gonzalez. “A lot of credit goes to Harlingen South, they’re a great team and 32-6A is tough district, all of these team’s are well coached and have talented players.”

Harlingen South plays crosstown rival Harlingen on Monday at Boggus Stadium at 7:15 p.m.
