SANTA ROSA — As the pre-district meets continue around the Valley, some of the smaller high schools had some of their best outings at the Fear the Spear Relays at Santa Rosa High School.

The Raymondville boys and the Edinburg Quest girls took home top honors Friday night.

Raymondville scored 132 points, ousting Lyford’s 123-point output, while the Edinburg Quest girls’ 129 points just narrowly bested the Raymondville girls score of 127.

Despite some bad weather earlier in the week, the Raymondville boys were glad to see a clear day and were able to add some bounce to their step after Friday’s win.

“The kids have competed this year. We’ve gotten some kids back and I think we’ve worked pretty hard despite the weather lately. Today was a good day with good weather,” said Raymondville boys track coach John Hinojosa.

“The team is hitting their best times right now and we need to keep improving. We are getting better and we’re a long way from our best. We needed to hit this time today and I think it’ll help us out a lot.”

With all schools being of the sub-5A variety, the Edinburg Quest girls took the opportunity to get a look at fellow District 32-3A members Brownsville Frontier, Lyford and Santa Rosa prior to the district meet on April 15 and 17.

“I saw a lot of heart and determination from all our girls and especially from our freshman Valery Tobias and sophomore Jillian Terry,” girls head coach Robbie Cruz said. “They put hard work in and I’m proud. Now the girls know teams are going to be coming for them after seeing Lyford, Santa Rosa and Frontier. Hopefully the girls are up to the challenge.”

Terry took home the high-point awards with 35 points after winning the high jump, 300- and 100-meter hurdles.

She also anchored the mile relay team to a win.

“Before every event I’m always sick to my stomach and I didn’t expect this. This is one of my top days and I beat my personal records in both the hurdles and the mile relay,” Terry said. “I really hope I can do better, but it’s going to be tough to top today.”

Terry and Tobias took the top two sports the high jump and recorded jumps of 4’10” and 4’6”, respectively.

On the boys side, sophomore Kai Money of Brownsville St. Joseph was the points title winner with 25 points.

Money was a part of the 4×100-, 4×200- and 4×400-meter relay teams, which all took home gold.

Individually, Money won the long jump with a jump of 19’ 1.”

“This is our second meet of the year and we’re coming off of a good Brownsville city meet. We’re not where we want to go right now, but this was a great meet,” Money said. “We have to continue to keep working because, like basketball and football, we have a tough district.”
