LA FERIA — The Lionettes defeated District 32-4A rival Rio Hondo 6-2 on Tuesday night at the La Feria Sports Complex.

After losing to Hidalgo last week, La Feria (5-5, 4-1) found a way to bounce back against Progresso heading into Tuesday’s showdown versus the Lady Bobcats.

“We’re learning little by little that nothing is impossible,” said La Feria head coach Lizzette Esparza. “We have a lot of little things to fix, but they work hard at practice and they have the drive to do it.”

The light rain didn’t do the Lady Bobcats (8-2, 4-1) any favors after falling behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first.

The Lionettes scored three unearned runs by Brittany Garza, Adriana Fonseca and Connie Ceballos.

Garza hit a low ball that went past the first baseman and started a chain of errors for the Lady Bobcats.

In the top of the third –after a wild pitch from Lionette pitcher Brittany Tamez moved the Lady Bobcats runners to second and third – Amanda Torres hit a deep ball to center field that brought a runner in to make the score 3-2.

However in the bottom of the sixth, Frankie Maldonado hit a ball to deep center that drove in Belisa Vela and Camryn Lopez.

After the game, Esparza had nothing but good words about her starting pitcher Brittany Tamez.

“She was on tonight,” said Esparza. “Anything I asked her to throw she did. She’s young and this was a big game for her.

“We asked her to do something different tonight and she stepped up to the plate and she did it.”
