RAYMONDVILLE — Friday night Raymondville made two statements. First, the Bearkats proved they could move the ball with Christopher Trevino calling the shots and, second, that head coach Frank Cantu’s defense packs a punch.
“I thought we played really physical,” said Cantu. “We’ve played two teams in a row that were power teams and I thought we improved this week a lot more from last week.
“We fixed some of the mistakes from last week and next week is a totally different ball game.”
During the controlled portion of the game, Raymondville scored twice behind the speedy junior wide receiver L.J. Santana, who gave the Bearkats a 2-0 advantage, while the defense made crucial stops that included an interception by Albert Najara.
After a brief intermission the teams went live for the next two quarters taking the ball at their own 30-yard line.
On the opening drive of the live portion, Trevino connected with David Marroquin for a 65-yard gain. Two plays later the Bearkats caught the Cowboys napping with a 20-yard reverse touchdown with 11 minutes left in third quarter giving Raymondville a 6-0 lead.
Midway through the third, Trevino demonstrated that aside from passing he could also run as he broke loose on a 24-yard scramble to make the score 13-0
“I think (Trevino) is going to have a breakout year,” said Cantu. “We’re being very patient with him and just giving a few plays, but when the regular season starts next weeks he will take all the snaps and it will be his first full time action.”
Two possessions later junior Derrick Saenz took a short pass and converted it into a 60-yard gain giving the Bearkats a first down at the Porter 16 before Josue Garcia capped it out with a 16-yard run.
