Brownsville Veterans takes scrimmage over La Joya High

STAFF REPORTS

Brownsville Veterans Memorial didn’t mind if it won or lost its first scrimmage.

The only thing that mattered was if it was without injury.

The Chargers escaped injury and also earned a victory, defeating La Joya High 2-1 in the controlled portion of the scrimmage and earning a 7-7 tie in the live action portion Friday at La Joya.

“It was a great scrimmage, we came out 100 percent healthy, so that was the most important (thing),” Brownsville Veterans coach David Cantu said. “We played a bunch of different kids everywhere, so that was good.”

Offensively, the coach was very happy.

“We moved the ball extremely well, offensively we are progressing,” Cantu said. “Defensively, we are where we need to be right now.”

Running back Omar Rodriguez scored on a 20-yard run and older brother Derrik Rodriguez scored from 3 yards out to lead the Chargers in the controlled version.

During the live portion, after a 60-yard pass play to the 5-yard line, Carlos Garza punched it over the goal line to give Brownsville Veterans its only score.

La Joya High wideout Joel Casas, expected to be a key piece of the offense, scored the touchdown for the Coyotes.

“Overall, I was happy with the performance of the kids,” La Joya coach George Espinoza said. “They came out, and they were ready to play. They didn’t shy down. By size, we were smaller. Even though we were mismatched, the kids played with a lot of fire.”
