Metro-Area Tennis Notes: Eagles coach encouraged by youth

The Hanna Golden Eagles’ tennis team is looking at this season as an opportunity to win in a new-look District 32-6A.

Hanna will look to younger players to make that happen, and Hanna coach Terry Hoover is impressed with the rate those members of his squad are making progress.

“A lot of young players have matured quickly,” he said. “And we’re getting better every week.”

Even though the newcomers are looking good, Hoover would like to see his team iron out some of the unforced errors.

“We need to cut down on mental mistakes and cut back on missing the easy shots.”

Hanna travels to Los Fresnos tonight to take on the Falcons.

NEW DIGS: The Porter Cowboys also have changed districts, and tennis coach Jaime Guillen would like to see his team make the regional round of the postseason.

There is no playoff system for Porter in District 32-5A, so the regular season is that much more important for the Cowboys.

“This is a pretty good division,” Guillen said. “Teams like Mercedes are always tough every year.”

In order to compete, Porter will lean on its top players, whom Guillen has been impressed with so far this season.

“The top two girls and the top four boys on the team have really played well so far,” he said.

With all but two of the girls on the team being underclassmen, he knows the skill level as a whole can be better. But he won’t accept age as an excuse.

“We’ve only got two senior girls on this team,” he said. “But that’s no excuse. They can still compete.”
