Weslaco East survived a scare Thursday night, surviving La Joya High 21-20 after trailing by 6 early in the fourth quarter at La Joya.

“Our quarterback Darren Rivas led us the last drive. … That guy is a two-year starter and he showed why tonight,” Weslaco East coach Mike Burget said. “He stepped up when we needed him on the last drive to punch it in.”

The Wildcats improved to 4-0. La Joya High fell to 1-3.The Coyotes outgained the Wildcats 311-243 in total yards and led 20-14 with 8 minutes left.

“A win is a win,” Burget said. “We’re very happy to get the win against a La Joya team that came out, played well and took it to us. As a coach I have to be happy to get out with a win.

“We just have to find a way to play better.”

Rivas scored two touchdowns for Weslaco East and Lupe Moron scored once. Receiver Joel Casas scored twice for La Joya High, amassing 120 yards on five receptions. Justin Leanos scored the other touchdown.

“As a team we did not play very well on offense or defense,” Burget said. “I take nothing away from La Joya. They were very hungry tonight. They wanted to play football more than we did, and it showed tonight. We were very fortunate to get out of there with a W.”
