32-6A notebook: Cards, Hawks, ’Hounds all on losing skids

MARK MOLINA | Staff Writer

The last two weeks have been hard for some of the heavy hitters in District 32-6A.

Harlingen, Harlingen South and San Benito have all come up empty in the last two weeks of play.

The Harlingen South season-opening win over Weslaco, who is now 1-2, is starting to hold less weight and is also starting to feel like it was so long ago.

Since falling to the Hawks, the Panthers narrowly got by Donna in week two and were blown out by Corpus Christi King this past week.

As for the Hawks, they have lost the last two games by a combined score of 72-17.

South head coach Lanny Wilson has looked at these games as rehearsals for district play do to his team’s youth, but with only the bye week to go before they meet Brownsville Veterans Memorial on Sept. 27, they have planty to work on.

The defense has had problems the last two weeks and have given up big plays.

Against Vela the Hawks were within striking distance until the Sabercats puched in three straight touchdowns and this past Friday against Weslaco East, they watched the Wildcats pile on 453 yards of total offense in a 30-0 loss.

On the other side of the coin, the offense has halted and has put up just three points in their last six quarters.

HARLINGEN SEEKS MOMENTUM: Harlingen’s Manny Gomez was hoping to get healthy going into the first game, but the Cards have done just the opposite.

After losing starting quarterback Bowie Davis for 3 to 6 weeks to a calf injury, sophomore back up Jesse Castro left during the first half of Harlingen’s 21-14 loss against McAllen.

Despite the injury, the Cardinals still moved the ball were in position to knockoff the Bulldogs with a 14-13 lead with less than four minutes to play.

The defense kept the Cards afloat against mcallen and they hope to do the same as they host the Weslaco panthers Friday.

The 1-2 Panthers are also looking for a bit of momentum after falling to Corpus Christi King 28-7.

SAN BENITO LOOKING TO REGROUP: Like Harlingen South, the Greyhounds have their own struggles to deal with defensively heading into their bye week.

In their last two contests both Weslaco East and McAllen Memorial have eached rushed for more than 420 yards and four touchdowns.
