East’s Moron, Lyford’s Ramirez named Star’s Athletes of Week

It was a big weekend for Weslaco East’s Lupe Moron and Lyford’s Miranda Ramirez as both athletes helped lead their respective teams to victory.

For their tremendous efforts, the two were named the Valley Morning Star’s Athletes of the Week.

On Friday evening in Weslaco, Moron led the Wildcats to an impressive 35-0 win over Harlingen South by rushing for 214 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns.

His pair of TDs came on impressive runs of 64 and 70 yards as the Cats rolled to 398 yards on the ground.

More impressive was the fact that Moron did not even start the game due to what East head coach Mike Burget described as a “coach’s decision.”

Despite coming in late, he still managed to surpass 200 yards for the second time this season and help the Cats improve to 3-0.

Weslaco East looks to remain perfect this week when they take on La Joya on the road Thursday.

On Saturday afternoon, Ramirez helped the Lady Bulldogs rally past a tough San Perlita team 25-14, 23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 15-7.

Ramirez led Lyford with 15 kills, 12 digs, two assists and a block as the Lady Bulldogs improved to 15-9 on the season.

This is the second time Ramirez has been named a VMS Athlete of the Week. Two weeks ago she earned the accolade after recording nine kills, seven digs and a pair of aces in a straight-game win over Progreso.

“She has been a dominant player for our team. She’s a great all-around player,” said Lyford head volleyball coach Jennifer Soto of Ramirez.

“She can serve, she’s great on serve-receive, she has a great block, a great hit, so she’s one of the main forces of our team.”

The Lady Bulldogs look for continued success this week as they take on Valley View on the road Tuesday then host Mathis on Friday at 5 p.m. The team opens District 32-3A action against IDEA Frontier on Sept. 26.
