Port Isabel’s De Los Santos, Torres named Star’s Athletes of the Week

In volleyball, the Lady Tarpons started the week with a District 32-4A victory over Rio Hondo then ended it on Saturday with another league win over Raymondville.

Meanwhile, the Tarpons football team steamrolled Valley View 39-12 to stay perfect on the season at 4-0.

Behind all the victories were solid athletic performances, but leading the way were Gabby Torres and Alex De Los Santos, who are the Valley Morning Star’s Athletes of the Week.

Torres, a senior, was instrumental in the Lady Tarpons’ straight-game win against Rio Hondo last Tuesday night as she led the team with 11 kills and four digs.

She also had a solid performance in PI’s 25-15, 25-15, 30-28 win over Raymondville on Saturday.

The Lady Tarpons are in search of their third straight district championship and, thanks to players like Torres, they seem well on their way to achieving their goal.

“We’ve got a couple of small things that we want to work on, but overall we’re sitting pretty good right now,” Lady Tarpons coach Julie Breedlove told the Brownsville Herald after their match on Tuesday.

“I like the way we’re playing, and with the improvements we’re making on a weekly basis I believe we’re right on track (to being where we want to be).”

The Lady Tarpons take to the road this week as they travel to Rio Grande City today to take on the Grulla Lady Gators. Then, on Saturday, they take on the Hidalgo Lady Pirates at Hidalgo.

As for De Los Santos, the junior running back led the Tarpons to their 27-point victory over Valley View by rushing for 220 yards on 13 carries for an impressive three touchdowns.

De Los Santos’ TDs came on runs of 65, 74 and 32 yards as the Tarpons rolled to 356 total rushing yards despite a rain-soaked field.

Port Isabel is Port Isabel,” Valley View head coach Ubaldo Peña said after Friday’s game. “They’re awesome. They’re the team to beat in the Valley.”

The Tarpons look to improve to 5-0 this Friday when they host the Brownsville St. Joseph Bloodhounds, who also enter the contest undefeated at 4-0.
