The Hanna Golden Eagles picked up their first win of the season Friday night, traveling to Mission High and earning a 23-14 victory.

Hanna coach Rene Medrano was proud of his team’s effort.

“These kids were faced with quite a challenge,” he said. “And they came out and played well.”

“It’s definitely a start. We had some big stops in some crucial situations.”

Hanna quarterback Andy Lopez passed for two touchdowns and kicked a field goal. Both TD passes were caught by Lucas Olivares, and running back Brando Barreda added a touchdown on the ground.

At Mission, the Vikings remained winless, and coach William Deen wasn’t happy with the way his offense performed.

“The defense played great,” he said. “The offense didn’t play very well, though. It seemed like every time we had possession we’d fumble the football.”

Alex Cisneros threw a touchdown pass for the only Vikings score.

Brandon Casas and Gabriel Benavides led the Diamondbacks’ running attack as Pioneer won its first game at home.

Casas, a sophomore, scored on a 16-yard run during the opening half. Benavides, a backup running back, scored from 8 yards out after intermission, as Pioneer (2-0) largely contained visiting Pace (0-2) en route to its second consecutive win.

“Great defense again, kind of like last week,” Diamondbacks coach Jason Wheeler said. “It’s a good win for our program. We still got a lot of mistakes to correct. But I don’t think we have one senior starting. So it’s good experience for us.”
