Cardinals open season on disappointing note

San Antonio Reagan opened up a scoring assault on Big Red and never looked back as the Rattler s bounced back from a season-opening loss to defeat the Cards 42-0, in a non-district clash for both squads.

It was the season opener for Harlingen (0-1) who hosts McAllen next week at Boggus Stadium in their home opener.

“We did some growing up tonight,” Cards head coach Manny Gomez said. “We have a lot of work to do after this loss and we’re going to get after it. Tonight’s loss was a great tool to help us grow…and not just the kids but the coaching staff as well.”

Harlingen’s fortune changed on the third play of the game when starting quarterback Bowie Davis left the game with a calf injury.

That opened up the way for sophomore Jesse Castro, who played the rest of the way. Castro was penciled in to get some playing time while Davis lined up at receiver. But with Davis out, Castro remained under center the rest of the game.

“He did a very good job for us,” Gomez said of Castro. “He was very focused ad very stoic out there. He’s a very confident kid and he showed us some good things tonight.”
