Port Isabel’s climb up the AP state poll continues after last week’s 39-12 victory over Valley View. The Tarpons tied Robinsion this week for 15th place with seven points, up two spots from last week.
Junior Alex De Los Santos leads the Tarpons’ offense with 528 yards on 35 carries just ahead of senior Jamie Gonzalez, who has 417 yards on 49 carries. The run-heavy offense has amassed a total of 1,442 yards thus far and have scored 17 touchdowns.
However, this week will be an interesting test for the Tarpons’ Seawall Defense as the Tarpons host Brownsville St. Joseph (4-0) on Friday.
On the defensive side of the ball Port Isabel (4-0) has only given up 324 yards on the ground this season, but has relinquished 671 passing yards. The Bloodhounds, meanwhile, have scored an average of 43 points and outscored its opponents 172-89.
BACK IN FORM: In District 16-4A DII, Rio Hondo is back to its winning ways after hammering Hidalgo 48-20 last week. The Bobcats offense accumulated 513 yards against the Pirates behind Michael Garate’s 250 yards rushing. The senior leads the team with a total of 417 yards and five touchdowns on the ground while teammate Alan Michael Alfaro has 213 on 30 carries.
This week Rio Hondo (3-1) welcomes Grulla (0-4), which is still looking for its first win of the season.
BACK TO WORK: Raymondville looks to pick up where it left off before last week’s bye week, as the Bearkats welcome Kingsville King on Friday at Burnett Stadium.
Raymondville (2-1) will hope to extend its two-game win streak against the Brahmas (1-3) who have struggled this season.
The Bearkats’ offense, led by Christopher Trevino, has rushed for a total of 912 yards this season.
Seniors Trevino and Miguel Tristan lead the run-heavy Bearkats offense with a combined 784 yards rushing.
COUGAR TOWN: In District 16-2A DI, Santa Maria (2-1) will take on Lasara (0-3) at Cougars Stadium this Friday.
The Cougars are back on track after beating Benavides 40-0 and shutting down the Eagles offense to minus 38 yards.
Santa Maria was led by senior Felix Cantu, who had 140 yards rushing on only three carries.
“We are happy with the win but need to continue to work hard and improve as a team,” said head coach Mark Aguero. “Our seniors continue to lead this team. David Ortiz and Felix Cantu are the leading rushers, while Isidro Montelongo and john Garcia lead the team with 26 tackles each.”
